Babaali** Islamic Azad University of Tehran Abstract Developed countries pay much attention to civic culture and educating citizens in this regard; its beneficial results in welfare, development, and progress of society have made developing countries understand its necessity thus to provide training and research. The aim of this paper is to determine how civic culture education and law abiding is presented in elementary school Let's Read Persian books (second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades) in 1393-1394 (2014-2015) in Iran. The results show that of the total of 72 stories and tales, only 17 cases contain the component of law abiding, mostly in the second and third grade books for students with less reading ability. The frequency of indices also suggests there is not a relative balance so that the indices of citizenship rights are 53% and adherence to the norms, values, and laws and regulations is 5.9%. In addition, 67% of the themes have negative values undermining law abiding. Thus they are incompatible with the goals of the educational system requiring modification in the contents of these books. <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Power Discourse and its Process in School Institution Case Study: Majid Stories by Hoshang Moradi Kermani N. Binazir* Guilan University Abstract Power should not be reduced to one structure or single institution or merely its final forms i.e. state authority and law. Power is a process which flows in and influences all relations and the most subtle social interaction mechanisms. Power creates pleasure with the help of discourse and with lingual-epistemological formations creates thought systems and truth executing subjectification. Power discourse articulates its statements into the body of society forming a kind of monitoring hierarchy. In this process power is hidden completely but imposes upon the subjects the visibility principle and being watched. This paper using Michel Foucault's views on modern power and power discourse analyzes the process and the role of disciplinary power in school institution, which is a suitable place for applying disciplinary technology. Analyzing Majid Stories by Hoshang Moradi Kermani, it is argued how power discourse with its specific lingual strategies and by sorting statements and repetition and fixating them in a hierarchical structure (school principal, assistant principal, teacher, and Bibi, Majid’s grandma) articulates its statements and places math course and its semantically related issues in the center of disciplinary power discourse and not only pushes aside literature--Majid’s favorite course-- but also using the force of discourse makes Bibi and Majid to retreat. Disciplinary technology with visibility principle makes it possible to implement disciplinary punishment (abuse, punishment, and exam) in order to educate tame bodies; it also classifies students into weak, smart, bright, and stupid (hierarchical look). Of course authority of power discourse does not necessarily mean the absolute subjugation and submission of the subjects. Majid resists the pressure of discourse with different techniques and power discourse welcomes these resistances and refusals. <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Layer Semiotics of Young Adult’s Fiction Covers (Novel Series of Today’s Young Adults) T. Sheykhi** A. Jamali* Hormozgan University Abstract Semiotics is a science in which signs, are studied, identified and classified. Framing the picture converts it to a text with an indicator and signifier function, in which various layers can be explored. Sometimes, in the adolescents’ books, the only available picture for the entire book is the cover picture. Since the audiences of these pictures are young adults and they are capable of understanding complex and hidden concepts; the pictorial metaphors, semiotics and abstraction can be retrieved. In this paper, the layer semiotics of the cover picture of four novels, (the chosen works of the novel series for today’s young adults published by Institute for the Intellectual Development of children and young adults) are considered in order to read different layers of codes using the inner relation of pictorial text to the written text. In these four novels, it seems that the illustrator of the cover photo has read the narrative text and has attempted to spread up a comprehensive pictorial text in order to introduce several semantic layers to the audience by taking the structure and type of the written text into account. Abstract
Power inequality between creators and readers of literary books for teenagers and youth on the one hand, and inevitability of ideology impregnating such literary works on the other hand, hasled critics and theorists of children literature to come to the conclusion that young readers should know about presence and quality of ideology in the text. Thus, instead of accepting one sided strategy, readers can become active and actor of a text to release themselves from the pressure of ideology. The guidelines of Nodelman (2000) about the impact of distancing on reader, McGillis' (2009) views on the importance and functions of polyphony and Stephens' (2011) ideas on the role of dialogism support such claims. Alongside the role of parents and teachers, it can be expected that authors openly choose critical reading. Some picture books recently published in Iran show that some authors pay attention to such critical reading. This paper seeks to find authors' strategies for widening the critical reading ability in picture books. This research uses qualitative method, documentary data mining, and inductive content analysis. The research analysis shows that selected samples try to follow this idea; however they have not fully embraced the critical reading possibilities.

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Publication of Translated Children’s Literature: The Current State, Challenges and Selection Factors N. Arab-Torbati* M. Khoshsaligheh** M. Pourkhaleghi Chatroodi*** Ferdowsi University of Mashhad Abstract This descriptive study used data from observations, interviews and questionnaires to explore the present state of the publication of translated children’s literature into Persian in Iran with focus on the challenges and the influential factors on translation and publication of this literature. Based on a triangulated method, a purposive selection of professional Iranian translators and prominent publishing agents were interviewed. Also, over 120 parents and their children at primary school were asked to complete two originally-designed questionnaires. Grounded theory procedures were used and the data was analyzed qualitatively. The findings reveal some reasons for the present greater tendency towards publishing translated children’s literature compared to original work in Persian, including Iran’s not being party to international copyright agreements and as such low cost of translated literature due to the omission of illustration and authorship fees, availability of numerous low-charging translators, the vast diversity in international market, the limited number of world-level Iranian authors in competition with the large number of internationally-recognized writers of children’s literature, as well as the easy access of Iranian translators to internationally-recognized foreign children’s literature. Some of the criteria for the selection and translation of the foreign children’s literature refers to the needs analysis, translators’ recall of childhood memories, producing work of great value. Some of the challenges in this filed concern varieties of retranslations, unavailability of certain necessities, and commissioning issues. The developed model presents the influential factors and agents in the publication of translated children’s literature in Iran. Key words: children's literature, translation publication market, challenges, translation selection factors, Iran. * MA in English Language Translation, nooshin72us@yahoo.com ** Associate Prof in Translation Studies khoshsaligheh@um.ac.ir *** Prof in Persian Language and Literature dandelion@um.ac.ir]]></dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Critical Discourse Analysis of Challenges of Kayhan Bacheha (KB, a Magazine for Children) With Social and Political Phenomenon of the Islamic Revolution S. Atarodi* Ferdowsi University of Mashhad Abstract The emergence of children's magazines in Iran dates back to Iranian Constitutional era. These magazines introduced readers to the life and education of children in western societies encouraging a critical look at their own life and others. A major part of fictional literature of the magazine were selected and translated from foreign sources. Discourse practices of journals like KB were formed by the social, political and cultural structures, especially power and domination. Thus, this research is conducting a discourse analysis of the magazine in a time period of five years before and after Islamic Revolution of Iran in order to study production, consumption, the discipline of discourse governing the cause and effect and how discourses were activated for a specific interpretation. Moreover, the possible effects and influences of this magazine on the social and political events leading to the revolution. <dcterms:abstract><![CDATA[Women Narrated by Men: A Study of Representation of Women and Girls in Adolescents Novels Written by Male Authors M. Kohansal* Islamic Azad University of Iran, Shiraz Abstract Attitudes towards women is of utmost importance in adolescent novels due to the effecte such works have on the transformation of the attitude of the audience. In replicating characters of the novels, the adolescents vicariously adopt and internalize attributes and roles. This study aims at investigating the representation of women in those adolescent’s novels written by male authors. Findings were obtained through inductive reasoning. To this end, five books, Lullaby for the Dead Girl, Wake Me up When the War Ends, Hasti, The Romance of Jonah in the Fish's Belly, A Slice of Pizza for the Grilled Trapezoid were selected. The present study intends to answer the following questions: What are women’s attributes in such novels? What are these women’s perspective towards woman in general and themselves? How do they see men? What are the women’s worldview and lived experience and whether there are differences among women of different social status? Finally, how is men’s outlook towards women in adolescents’ novels? The results of the study highlight the fact that regarding the stereotypes and gender discrimination, all 3 generations of women living in the stories have the same condition and their different social status does not have any impact on the patriarchal society’s attitude towards them. Hesampour** Shiraz University Abstract Stories written for children are usually full of symbols and signs which can lead the reader to better perception if understood and appreciated properly. Jungian approach helps us to analyze deeper layers of meaning through signs and symbols of the unconscious. In this study of "The White Pigeon beside the Mirror" by Ahmadreza Ahmadi, archetypal characters, situations and symbols are analyzed. It is argued that with these archetypes the child character goes through the process of individuation. The character goes on a voyage which has several stages moving from innocence to experience and finally gains organized innocence harmonizing the unconscious and the conscious.
