Abstract
Typographic titles encompass both a reading dimension (linguistic conceptualization) and a visual dimension (aesthetic conceptualization). Consequently, they engage in the conceptualization of cover designs through two forms of interaction: 1) extratextual interaction and 2) intratextual interaction. Intratextual interaction pertains to the relationship between the reading dimension and the visual dimension of the title (its typographic form). In contrast, extratextual interaction involves the relationship between the main title and the images and other textual elements present on the cover. This research aims to explore how the intratextual interaction of the typographic form correlates with the linguistic concept of the title. It seeks to answer the question of how the interplay between the reading and visual dimensions of the title shapes the conceptualization of the cover design. The methodology employed is directed qualitative content analysis, grounded in the theory of text-image interaction proposed by Scott and Nikolajeva. The data were selected purposefully, and the sample for this study consists of twenty-eight titles from young adult novels that, first, feature Persian typographic titles on their covers and, second, were published or republished between 2008 and 2023. The term "typographic titles" refers to titles whose visual elements depict a specific image. This research is innovative in that while the aforementioned theorists focused on the interaction between written text and the extratextual nature of images, this study extends its classification method to highlight intratextual interaction. The findings suggest that one of the critical factors affecting how a young reader engages with a book title is the nature of the interaction between the typographic and linguistic dimensions of the title.
