Abstract

Considering the role of education in increasing environmental literacy and preventing environmental degradation, changes have been made in the content of textbooks, especially in the elementary school, and in order to achieve the goals set in these books, their content needs to be examined and their positive and negative characteristics need to be shown for greater effectiveness. Accordingly, in this study, the environmental concepts of the fourth grade Persian textbook are examined and criticized using a documentary method and a descriptive-analytical approach to show what kind of attitude towards the environment there is in this book, what kind of perspective, emotion and behavior the proposed components create in students, and what are their strengths and weaknesses. The findings and results of the study show that in this book, a God-centered approach to the environment is highlighted, and this type of view causes students to consider nature as an existence independent of humans; as a result, they feel responsible for it and take more care of it. Also, raising issues such as environmental assessment, the life cycle, the food chain, and drawing a positive image of nature makes students feel good about the knowledge they gain from various aspects of the environment and deepens their understanding of it; however, there are also disadvantages in this book; such as the lack of a practical link between the teaching method and the education of environmental concepts, the failure to establish a connection between a God-centered approach and solving environmental problems, and the attribution of negative attributes to elements of nature, which create negative attitudes, feelings, and behaviors in students; therefore, a review of these issues is suggested.
