Abstract

Narrative skills, as a foundational component of literacy, play a vital role in children’s academic and social success. Recent developments in educational technology, particularly generative artificial intelligence have created new opportunities for enhancing language skills. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of AI-based interactive storytelling on the narrative skills (at the levels of microstructure and macrostructure) of first-grade male students in the city of Sanandaj. The research employed a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design with a control group. The statistical population consisted of all first-grade male students in Sanandaj during the 2024–2025 academic year, from whom 32 students were selected through convenience sampling and assigned to experimental and control groups of 16 students each. The experimental group received an intervention involving AI-based interactive storytelling, whereas the control group received traditional instruction. Data were collected using the Edmonton Narrative Norms Instrument (ENNI) and analyzed through multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA). The results indicated a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in the posttest. The mean scores of the experimental group were significantly higher in both narrative microstructure (vocabulary and grammar) and macrostructure (story organization) compared to the control group. These findings suggest that artificial intelligence, by functioning as an instructional scaffold and providing personalized feedback, can serve as an effective tool for enhancing students’ language skills. It is recommended that this technology be integrated into the elementary curriculum as a complement to traditional instructional methods.
