A STUDY OF YOUNG ADULT’S TASTE FOR, AND
INTEREST IN FICTION IN MIDLLE SCHOOLS OF SHIRAZ
This paper is a study of the opinion and taste of young adults with regard to fiction through a quantitative approach. The data was collected from Shiraz County junior high school students with the help of a researcher-made questionnaire. The statistical sample included 484 young adults of seventh and eighth grade (243 female and 241 male) who were selected through random sampling from all four districts of Shiraz Department of Education. Data analysis suggested that 71.6% of female and 45.2% of male students read stories. Other statistical analyses show that novels and long stories are more popular compared to short stories, anecdotes and other types of stories. The main source of supplying fiction for male and female young adults is purchasing books and then reading on the Internet. The most popular type of stories among young adults are realistic stories followed by fantasy. Female students are mostly fan of romance, while male students tend to read crime. Although there is disagreement in selecting tone and environment for female and male students, adventure and thrillers are among the most popular. The taste comparison of young adults in selecting story type and topic and also comparing the most attractive stories read by them suggest that there is a huge gap between books for children published in 2009-2011 and the taste and selection of young adults.
